How to Catch a Liar

Written by: SingWolfxx on February 4, 2010

We all know how to lie right? We usually tell lies right? But that is not what this is about (see the title). Oh right, it’s about how to catch a liar! I researched this from watching the History Channel’s: The History of Body Language; and also from my school’s newspaper. I was so utterly amazed about it that I did an tributary just for the people on the Internet. According to a doctor, who is famous, there is such a thing as a micro expression. Which evidently is seen on every person’s face all over the world. You are probably thinking what in Zeus’ name is a micro expression? I looked it up in a dictionary. I couldn’t find it; so I found both words: micro, meaning extremely small, and expressions, meaning a look or intonation expressing personal reaction, feeling, etc. Put them together and created: micro expression, an extremely small look or intonation expressing personal reaction or feeling (Got it memorized?) Before liars cover their reactions, this micro expression can expose their true feelings! Try to catch that before you accuse! Here also some steps to help you:

1.) Establish a baseline behavior in your subject – make note of any deviation (this is THE KEY to lie detection!!)

2.) Recognize the related clusters (patterns) of deception
Challenge and refine your assumptions through observation and questioning (continue with step 3 and 4 until you…)

3.) Make your decision
I bet you are either confused or uninterested. Well that whole thing was A BIG LIE! That, I don’t know where I got that!

But Nevertheless, How to catch a liar is easy, besides micro expressions, you look into the person’s eyes! “THE EYES ARE THE KEY!” GET THAT MEMORIZED NOW!! They tell the whole story. The liar will flutter his or her eyes. Or looking in the wrong direction or any hesitation can give a liar away! Many believe that a person who lies doesn’t make a lot of eye contact. That is incorrect, a liar will actually makes a lot of eye contact; but also look for some hand gestures, if someone raises their lip they are liars, if they cover their eyes with their hand they are liars, and the list goes on and on. But if you don’t understand, then watch the History Channel and the FOX TV SHOW “Lie to Me“. The show will help you out a lot.

Here are some ways to catch a lair:
If the person touches his/her hand for comfort… You have a liar!
If the person look down or away from you… You have a liar!
If the person rubs their head near the temple region… Then you have a liar!
If they squeeze their face, rubs their neck, or even strokes there hand over there hair.. You have a liar!
If the lick their lips or even if they have a hard time swallowing… You have a liar!
If they are wringing their hands… You have a liar!
If the person is hiding their eyes then… You HAVE A Liar!
Those are some gestures there are a lot like their posture, behavior, and verbal responses.
I will list some for you:

General verbal responses:
May take longer to start answering.
May answer to quickly or before the question is completed.

The face will start whitening (indicates fear).
The face will start to show flushing (indicates anger or shame).

Posture:
Show early signs of extreme rigidity followed by alternating stiffness and relaxation
Their hands, legs, objects will be put in front of their body to form a barrier (folding arms, crossing legs, etc.).
